While this 1970 Checker MediCab for sale on Hemmings.com has been painted to look like a taxi, it apparently never once served a day in such livery. Most everybody – car enthusiast or not – knows Checkers for their taxis, but the Checkers more likely to survive the years and not get used up and thrown out like socks after too many washings were the company’s lesser-known specialty models, models like the MediCab, that were used far less frequently but still benefited from Checker’s rugged design and construction. From the seller’s description:
This is the Medic model made between 1969 & 1970. Some people say only 97 were made, others claim 103 but, even if they’d made 1,000 it would’ve been a small number. So 97 or 103 makes this particular car a true collectible by virtue of the minute amount that were manufactured. I changed the original color which was an ugly dark blue that made it look like a hearse. So i chosed to make it look like a taxi as my friend Ben Merkel from Ohio, (important man to know being that he’s one of the “Godfathers” of Checker parts) did to a Medic model he had and sold. I bought the decals and adopted the taxi theme that this cars are known for. The engine and transmission has been re-built (thus the small number of miles) although the odometer originally read 55,630…The car has no rust for it was well taken care of and made with excellent steel. It runs magnificent with its small 8 cylinder block 350 GM engine and colosus transmission. It has the old style brake system of drums on all wheels, so you’ll learn how to use the brakes. I had it for 14 years and being that I am a merchant marine I never get to use it for I’m always out to sea. The only thing that needs to be installed is the AC, all the hoses are there and, for that you call the other Checker godfather, Joe Pollard in California (I’ll provide you with both contacts) and ask him what kind of AC you need. As for my self, I am not gonna put another penny into this baby because I already have poured thousands into it, believe me.
